Wedding RSVP Message Examples

Asking for a reply is the most delicate message a host sends. It has to be clear about the deadline, useful to the venue, and impossible to read as pressure. Every example below is written to do that without counting guests in or making anyone feel chased.

The collection runs in order: the request that goes out with the invitation, the reminder as the deadline approaches, the gentle follow-up for guests who have not answered, and the confirmation once someone has. Longer versions are written for email, shorter ones for WhatsApp and SMS, and the etiquette behind them is worked through in the guide rather than repeated here.

How to word an RSVP request

Three facts make a request work: what you are asking for (a yes or a no), by when, and how to reply. Anything softer turns into a hint, and guests postpone hints. "Please let us know by the 12th using the form in the invitation" is friendly and unambiguous at the same time.

Giving the reason helps more than a bare deadline. Venues and caterers ask for final numbers on a fixed date, so saying that the reply is needed "so we can give the venue our numbers" is honest, and guests rarely find it pushy when the reason is visible.

If the replies are collected through a link, say so in the message and keep the rest short: the online RSVP tracker keeps yes, no, plus-ones and dietary notes on one list, which is exactly what the venue will ask for later.

Following up without making it awkward

Assume a missed message rather than an unwilling guest. Most people who have not replied simply lost the invitation among other chats, so the follow-up should open the door again instead of asking why nothing happened: "we're doing the seating plan and realised we haven't heard from you".

Never hint at cost. Wording that mentions the price per head, the plates already ordered or the money already spent turns a reply into a debt; guests who cannot come may then avoid answering at all. Ask for the answer, not for the reason.

If the answer is no, the confirmation matters as much as the invitation did. One short, warm reply keeps the relationship intact, which may matter more than the wedding itself.

Collect replies without the chasing

An InviteVia invitation has the reply form built in. Guests answer in one tap — yes, no, plus-ones and dietary notes — and the answers land on one list you can export.
